HISTORY

The origins of this unusual name is unknown, however lugar de Marnotos (the place of Marnotos), which gives its name to the Quinta, appears in a title deed dated 1060, before the creation of the Portuguese nation. The present property, which has always belonged to the same family, is a part of the original farm which was divided up by the descendants of the original owners. It is located in the demarcated region of vinhos verdes (green wines), where a transition wine - known as alvarinho (a particular quality of green wine) de Baião. This wine has some unusual characteristics, maybe due to the proximity of the demarcated region of porto wine.

Although Marnotos is only 5km from the river Douro and 3km from the Douro (area classified as patrimony of humanity), it has a mild micro-climate which combines the advantages of the Douro with the coast, without the inconveniences of the extreme temperatures which are typical of this region. The soil is composed of granite and not schist, the land has a south/west exposure to the sun within the Gestaçôvalley (the land of walking sticks), and is protected by three mountain ranges: Marão, Montemuroand Aboboreira; twelve km to the north lies the valley of the river Tâmega. These factors, combined with a sixty km distance from the sea create a very stable and pleasant climate.
